Carrying Water is a play that wonders how far we will go to get answers to terrible questions. Sara Riley is an acclaimed writer of Horror, who one day gets an unusual letter from an old friend. Jonathan Maru is on Death Row for a terrible crime, and is asking his old friend, and now famous author, to come home and meet him with the express purpose of writing his Final Statement, to be read immediately preceding his execution. Sara travels home, stopping along the way to meet with Marcus, another old High School friend, to ask if there was any way to foretell where they would all end up. She is also constantly in contact with her old English Teacher, Mrs. Sullivan, trying to navigate the multitude of emotions brought up by Jonathan’s request. When she finally arrives home, she meets with Jonathan and is able to ask all of the questions that have plagued her for years: What happened? How did he end up here? Is there any part of him that blames her and her friends? Is there a world in which things could have gone differently? And why, after all this time, reach out to her? In the end, Sara must decide if the acts Jonathan has committed are simply too awful. How can she speak for a person who would do what he has done? Does she actually believe in monsters? Or does she just like to write about them?
