Anna Belc

Anna Belc was born and raised in Poland, attended middle and high school in New York City, and as an adult fell in love with the Philadelphia area, where she studied theater and later nursing. Currently, she lives in Marquette in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where she works as an RN in a rural emergency department. Anna, who is the mother of three boys, is a playwright and translator of dramatic works. She is determined to see the Northern Lights before she heads back east this year.

Synopsis

In 2010 a plane carrying most of Poland's government crashes. Then a volcano erupts and flights are grounded due to ash. Somewhere, everywhere, a parent is dying. Spencer and Marysia are ex lovers who find themselves at an airport with nowhere to go yet somewhere else to be. They push each other to define home, family, and identity and leave us to wonder if they even want to leave.

The Fishbowl is a story of a family dealing with the loss of a son. The parents are Polish immigrants who, though they have been in America for a number of years, find themselves at a loss when upon their return from the funeral, they find a giant box of food on their doorstep. Their adult daughter is forced to explain that people in America offer condolences through food: "Somebody was just trying to be nice...

As days and nights pass each family member is confronted with the choices they have made over the years and the effect these choices continue to have.
