Both women live in difficult times, and the American woman is trying to draw courage and tenacity from the Grace O’Malley story in order to finish the work she began.

Grace O’Malley plied her trade off the west coast of Ireland. Her father was an Irish chief, but during her time, many of the Irish chiefs were submitting to the English who had colonized Ireland. A master sailor and games player, she outwitted English governors and officers to maintain her independence and control her destiny. When she is finally backed into a corner, she travels to England and gains a private meeting with Queen Elizabeth. While the details of the meeting are not known, Grace emerged from the meeting with a pension and freedom for her imprisoned family members.

The American woman in the course of the play finds not only courage but a balance between various parts of her life. She embraces the adventure of it all.
