Jared Sprowls is a Chicago based playwright and drag enthusiast whose work often explores queer themes and subverts traditional linear forms . His play “Bridget Bishop Presents: The Salem Bitch Trials” was written as part of his thesis in “Adapting Drag for Conventional Theatrical Forms” and premiered Off-Broadway through the Araca Project. His ten minute play “Fine Dining” has been produced at Northwestern University and the Skokie Theatre, and "Mistress/Goddess/Queen" (2018 O'Neill Semifinalist) was a part of Available Light's Next Stage Initiative. Sprowls has been a writer in the New Colony's Writers' Room 6.0, where he began "Lies, Lies, Lies: A Modern American Family Drama" as well as Jackalope Theatre's Playwrights Lab workshopping "Reverse Cowboy." He holds a B.A. in Theatre with Honors from Northwestern University.

Plays

  • Reverse Cowboy
    Cowboy is gay; he loves men. He's only truly loved a few, although he's been hurt by many more. He meets a new man while out for a night on the town, who tries to convince him that he's different. Cowboy is weary that's he's more of the same. As Cowboy's memory is flooded by suitors, lovers, and one night flings, he wonders if anyone will be the one or if it's less painful to be alone.
  • Lies, Lies, Lies: A Modern American Family Drama
    Chelsea hasn't been home since she left for college; holidays have come and gone. Her mother, Linda, is shocked when Chelsea shows up for the weekend, but what perfect timing, as her brother and sister-in-law are also visiting their ailing grandmother. A rare family reunion becomes all the more complicated when Chelsea is ready to be honest with her grandmother, while Linda is hoping to let Grandma Judy die in peace.
  • Fine Dining
    Did you finish your vegetables? Not too much! Who's ready for cake? Dinner conversation turns acidic in this fast paced, ten minute play.

    Monica made a mistake. Hera has had enough of women like Monica. Three Muses explore what happens to the wives and mistresses of men who been unfaithful. Must they be pinned against one another or is there a world where they find common ground?
  • Bridget Bishop Presents: The Salem Bitch Trials
    Bridget Bishop, the drag queen, decides to put on a play about Bridget Bishop, the first witch executed during the Salem Witch Trials. With the help of her drag family, a sexy go-go dancer, and Donna Summer's greatest hits, Bridget Bishop puts on a play/drag show about a woman who lost everything except her notoriety. As she also struggles to balance fame and family, she realizes that both Bishops have much in common.
