infested with the ghosts of homosexuals past, who demand that he write a “gay play"
or risk eternal damnation. As the sherry flows, and tensions mount, Lane must reckon
with his identity in order to avoid the tragic ends he believes to be inevitable to all tales

After losing his father in the 9/11 terrorist attacks, teenager Frederick Goldberg takes to the streets of his humble Westchester village posing at The Narly Narwhal, a superhero for the modern age, dedicating his life to preserving peace and justice. He is followed by Hugo, his impressionable young sidekick, as he searches for the man who killed his father- in his eyes, a treacherous super-villain known as "The Crab-Man". Meanwhile, his mother, grieving simultaneously the loss of her husband and the loss of her son's sanity, turns to a series of con men, such as a medium and a hack psychologist, who attempt to offer her and her child some peace of mind.
The Narly Narwhal asks: What happens when we cannot express our grief in conventional ways? What are the effects of a national tragedy? How far are some willing to go to take advantage of the grief of others? And what happens when we become desensitized to hyperviolence? What do we become?
In short, The Narly Narwhal asks what it is to be an American in the post-9/11 era.
