Rathbone focuses on the aftermath of the Lincoln assassination as it affected Major Henry Rathbone and his wife Clara Rathbone who were the guests of Lincoln that fateful night. Set eighteen years after the assassination in Germany, Henry and Clara struggle to maintain some semblance of their lives as Christmas approaches. Henry finds himself with one final chance to regain his political footing - trying to impress the Ambassador to Germany over a dinner. Clara, meanwhile, struggles with the recent death of her friend Mary Todd Lincoln and finds herself seeing a figure of Mary, literally haunting her. The Rathbones are losing the small grip to reality they maintained and find themselves being pulled back to that night - the night that defined their lives forever.
