Additionally, Perovich’s work has been selected and presented at Valdez Theatre Conference, Festival of New American Theatre at The Phoenix Theatre Company, Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival, and Mid-America Theatre Conference.
He was the founding Artistic Director of Now & Then Creative Company, who's mission focused on the "now"—new play development and productions of new works, while also celebrating the "then"—classics for the stage. In their 4 active years, Perovich produced over 10 new play development workshops featuring Arizona writers in addition to producing Medea by Euripides, Rhinoceros by Eugene Ionesco, and Antigone by Sophocles. Perovich also produced 24/48 for Now & Then, a combined 24 hour theatre project and 48 hour film challenge. 24/48 developed into Midnight Oil: A Film & Theatre Challenge that Perovich co-produced in August 2023 with Space 55 and B3 Theater, Inc., bringing over 35 Valley artists together to create new plays and films. John also previously served as the Director of New Play Development at Brelby Theatre Company in Glendale, AZ, serving as a resident dramaturg for Brelby’s productions of new works while facilitating Write Club, a monthly writers’ group committed to the development and production of new plays by Valley writers.
John has instructed playwriting for over 10 years as an adjunct instructor at Stockton University, Arizona State University, Chandler-Gilbert Community College, and Phoenix College. John’s students have written plays that have been selected for the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival and other national festivals and conferences. John is currently the Head of School at Metropolitan Arts Institute, where he also instructs Creative Writing.
Perovich earned his B.A. in Communications: Radio/TV/Film from Rowan University, M.A. in Educational Theatre from New York University, and his M.F.A. in Dramatic Writing from Arizona State University. He is the Southwest Regional Representative for Dramatists Guild of America, facilitating a free and open monthly writers’ group—Phoenix Dramatists Workshop—while also facilitating the Footlights series, an ongoing program of new play readings at Scottsdale Desert Stages.
