Alessandra Viegas

Alessandra Viegas is an NYC-born, LA-based playwright and screenwriter. Their plays explore queerness through the lens of family, temporality, and the body, using elements of magical realism and poetry. Alessandra’s plays have been read and workshopped at The Villa Aurora, The Ebell of Los Angeles, The Wende Museum, First Kiss Theatre, The Garry Marshall Theatre, and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. She was a Co-Lead Writer on Sacrifice Zone: Los Angeles, a multimedia theater project performed at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles in 2024. Her play, CHIMERA, was a semi-finalist for the O’Neill Theatre 2025 National Playwrights Conference. As each character digs deeper into grief, will love be enough to pull them out? BENEATH THIS EARTH explores intergenerational trauma, forgiveness, and asks the question: does my grief make me unloveable?

Before We Were tells the story of Ava, a college student who, through the process of interviewing her mother, Rosa, for her documentary, learns far more than she could have ever imagined. As Rosa opens up to Ava throughout a series of interviews about her own experience with multiple sclerosis, Ava gains independent access to Rosa’s memories and watches her past unfold. It is here that Ava meets Jared, Rosa’s...

As Rosa opens up to Ava throughout a series of interviews about her own experience with multiple sclerosis, Ava gains independent access to Rosa’s memories and watches her past unfold. It is here that Ava meets Jared, Rosa’s friend who died from AIDS in 1989, who begins to haunt Ava’s present. As the play oscillates between 1989 and 2016, Jared becomes more corporeal, and he and Ava develop a bond across temporal boundaries.

Kathleen doesn't want to sacrifice her authenticity, and Archie has reservations of his own as a recent war veteran. A ten-minute drama about authenticity and queer family.
