Mercedes White

Mercedes White was born and raised in Chicago. She grew up in the vibrant Mexican American community of Pilsen. As a biracial child of both African American and Mexican descent she always knew she wanted to tell the stories of the people in her community whose voices are often never heard. She is an actress and playwright dedicated to inspiring change through theatre. She is a founding member of Definition Theatre Company and has written three full-length plays. GENESIS: A Prequel to a Raisin in the Sun was produced by Titan Theatre Company @ The Queens Theatre in 2022. THE RIVER JORDAN had a public reading at Steppenwolf Theatre. THE SPACE IN BETWEEN was winner of the 2018 Urbanite Theatre's Modern Works Festival. Also Gentrification sucks.

Genesis is a prequel to A Raisin the sun, that centers on the early lives of Big Walter and Lena as they deal with tragedy and loss during the 1919 Chicago race riots. Through the bonds of friendship, old and new alike, Walter Lena are forced to come to terms with their new reality and begin the healing process.

Synopsis

In the summer of 2018, Cameron, an Afro-Dominicana former lawyer meets Samirah, a Muslim American painter, when she knocks on her apartment door asking for help with the dryers. Cameron and Samirah form a friendship like none other when Cameron offers to give Samirah guitar lessons that lead to new found feelings for eachother. Cameron, who gets her advice from her older sister and spunky 11 year old niece...

To make things more challenging Samirah’s conventional mother shows up and throws a wrench in their potential relationship. This intersectional challenging love story is a perfect blend of two culturally different women melding and growing together as one, as they learn from each other’s culture, stories and background.
