What is the place we reserve in our mind or in eternity for the now deceased homemakers who raised us? This question is central to the life of Stephen Maloney, from adolescence to his final years. Stephen’s experiences are told indirectly through family members and by those peripheral to his life. In a series of scenes set in heaven, earth and purgatory, characters communicate with the living and dead, through speeches and phone calls which are linked to the deaths of those speaking or placing the calls. In the play’s final scene, a phone call from Stephen at a Shinto shrine in Japan, identifies the source of the connection among all of the characters and the reason for their demise. The phone call provides a perspective on the scenes preceding it and concludes a remarkable fifty-year journey with revelation, discovery and resolution.
