Monteze Freeland is a multi- disciplined artist from Baltimore, Maryland and a 2009 graduate of Point Park University’s Conservatory of Performing Arts. In 2017 Monteze was named the Pittsburgh Post Gazette’s Performer of the Year for his performances in Dreamgirls, A Christmas Story, East Texas Hot Links, and Wild With Happy. Mr. Freeland has directed for Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company, Prime Stage, Kuntu Rep, CLO Summer Academy, and City Theatre. As a playwright his original musical Kalopsia received funding from the Heinz Endowments and was presented by the New Hazlett’s CSA Performance Series. As founder of The Lab Project he produced Women Say F*&k, Too,The Gospel Singer and a workshop of A.K. Payne’s On Rayton.Eventually steering the company to focus on arts education he began a five year partnership with ACH Clear Pathways, bringing theater arts to students in Pittsburgh’s Hill District. During this time Monteze also served as the Director of Education for Quantum Theatre Company servicing several Allegheny County school districts. As Producing Artistic Associate for Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company, under the artistic direction of Mark Clayton Southers, the company produced Seven Guitars and King Hedley II in the backyard of August Wilson’s childhood home and Gem of the Ocean at 1839 Wylie Ave. Mr. Southers’ MIss Julie, Clarissa and John, under the direction of Mr. Freeland, was selected for production at the National Black Theatre Festival in 2017 and traveled to Edinburgh, Scotland for the Fringe Festival the same year. Monteze is the current Associate Producer of City Theatre Company.
