Carlyn Aquiline is a freelance dramaturg, writer-editor, and educator who specializes in new play dramaturgy. Carlyn has collaborated as a dramaturg on the development and production of scores of new plays and musicals at City Theatre Company in Pittsburgh (where, as the staff dramaturg until 2015, she directed literary and dramaturgy initiatives), The Playwrights’ Center, Tectonic Theater Project, BAM, Mark Taper Forum, Arena Stage, La Jolla Playhouse, Kansas City Repertory, Hartford Stage, Yale Repertory Theatre, Arden Theatre, Lark Play Development Center, American Theatre Company, Luna Stage, Florida Stage, Syracuse Stage, Goodspeed Musicals, TheatreWorks (Palo Alto), Actor’s Express, Local Theater Company, and The Microscopic Opera Company, among others. Carlyn has also provided production dramaturgy for dozens of contemporary and classical works (favorite projects include Ibsen’s PEER GYNT, Shakespeare’s TWELFTH NIGHT, and Wilde’s THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST), and applies her dramaturgy background and skills as a research consultant for documentary films. Honors include the Frankel Award (for outstanding contributions to new play creation) and grants and fellowships from LMDA, Alcoa Foundation, Educational Foundation of America, Ella Lyman Cabot Trust (with playwright Andrew Rosendorf), and Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. Carlyn was Managing Editor of THEATER magazine for two years, and is currently editing long-form journalism as a faculty associate in the Department of Narrative Medicine at Columbia University. She has adjudicated many national residencies and awards for playwrights, dramaturgs, and other artists. Her teaching credits include Carnegie Mellon, Yale, Ohio, and Syracuse universities. Carlyn leads workshops in playwriting, dramaturgy, and creativity, independently and at universities and theatre organizations around the U.S. She is a graduate of the Yale School of Drama (MFA, Dramaturgy).
