  • Artificial Sunset
    20 Aug. 2023
A perfect juxaposition to some of Kennel's other works, "Artificial Sunset" provides a good look at the themes of addiction and the breaking of family cycles. The cast size and story both stay on the common path of well-structured storytelling while also taking us in a new direction in how we view the combination of character and concept. Max goes out of his way to reach for uncommon tales, and this one, however unique, can easily be interpreted in both large and small productions.
  • The Story of Jimmy Kaplingus
    20 Aug. 2023
If you have a team interested in something completely off the beaten path that digs into the existential struggle of being a crab, then look no further. This piece is abound with monologues perfect for any audition, and can be produced with maximal or minimal production thanks to the copious amount of world building. Additionally, the hilarious diatribes make for a production that, in my experience, keeps audiences constantly laughing throughout the dark narrative. Kennel knows how to present irreverence, and this production is a prime example of that.
  • SYZYGY

Carnes is clearly a writer's writer and does well with forcing us to track two conversations converging on one unknown. The bare bones, absurd experimental structure is in plain language, and yet, leaves a lot up for creative interpretation. Paired with a confusing arc, this piece is perfect for any small group looking to perform a piece that allows them to test the waters as they rehearse.
  • Aloha Apocalypse (Ten Minute Play)
    19 Jul. 2022
A thematically compelling and relevant piece, "Aloha Apocalypse" does well to capture a brief moment that captures an immense wave of emotions. Between the impeccable pacing and the nice blank palette for actors, this is a fantastic piece that can be interpreted in a number of ways. If you are looking for a selection to perform with a partner, this scene is a perfect practice in building an arc and notating beats.
  • X-ACT

This scene is really strong, hitting one part Jordan Harrison's "Marjorie Prime" and two parts "Ex Machina". While many science fiction stories tend to gloss over the "human privilege" inherent in these themes, "X-Act" does well to capture the voice of X in a believable way.
  • LIDIA: A MONOLOGUE
    18 Jul. 2022
Really vivid reading. The language structure not only immediately made an image of Lidia appear in my head, but it also felt like I could sense the surroundings as well. Poignant, direct message with clear, grounded characterization.
  • Letter to a Young Cosmonaut

A great example of science fiction as metaphor, "Letter to a Young Cosmonaut" is a story all too familiar and alien at the same time. It's one of those tales where you have to keep yourself strapped in as you ride into it, letting it unfold into something new and unexpected. It's clear Byrne can keep the action rolling amidst the message.
