The Fig Tree, and The Phoenix, and The Desire to be Reborn

by Isabelle Fereshteh Sanatdar Stevens

Synopsis

In the Iranian province of Zanjan, in an orchard where all of the trees have gone to sleep, one remains ripe with fruit. Underneath its fig-studded branches, on the chilliest August night of 1988, eight-year-olds Mandana and Javeed meet for the first time—except somehow it doesn’t feel like the first time. A story of what the world has been, what it is now, and what it could be.

A play for Palestine and Palestinian liberation. A play for Reem, and Sidra, and Hind, and every Palestinian. A play about homes, and homeland, and trees, and love, and family, and care, and anger, and wanting to be angry, and not feeling angry enough because you're so sad that the sad overwhelms the anger. A play about creating the world you want to exist in, even if that means burning down the one that exists. A play about freedom.

Lots of WLW media centers relationships with stark power imbalances--particularly those between underage girls and older women? And... everyone seems to be ok with this--within the world of the films (save for the usual homophobia), and within the audiences that engage with them.

The lesbians (and their allies--thanks, Ms. Lorraine) who meet biweekly at 327 Mystic to watch WLW films have noticed this phenomenon, and can't help but talk about it. They also talk about other things--like Stonewall, strong arms, and falling in love with your best friend. And they're a family, of sorts: a found family that knows how to have a good time... Maybe too good of a time, at points.

An intergenerational dramedy about what kids have access to and who has access to kids.

Kimia Zaman and her friends are fighting for freedom in the streets of Tehran; things take a turn when she begins to hear the voices--the Whispers--of the Mountains calling to her. Kimia answers their call and is swept up Mount Damavand, where she sacrifices the time allotted to her lifespan in exchange for the war to end that much sooner. Upon waking (after her 28-year slumber), she ventures back down the mountain and finds that she doesn't recognize the world anymore.

Inspired by "Rip Van Winkle"--the idea of falling asleep and waking up having missed an entire revolution. Inspired by Naqqali and oral storytelling tradition.

Written for those in Iran fighting for freedom, and those abroad who don't know what to do. A story for protestors, fighters, and those who dream of what could be. A story for those who carry an inescapable mountain of guilt on their shoulders.
