After dropping out of college for reasons she won’t talk about, Sam is forced to move home and start working. The gas station is an easy, boring job, full of coworkers tending to their own problems. Dallas, the manager, recently broke up with his fiancee. Lynn thinks she should be the manager, and she’s not afraid to tell you that. Jeneesa doesn’t care about this job, but she does care about coworker Dev, who is terrified to tell Jeneesa he’s in love with her. And then, on the back wall, an Employee of the Month poster, larger than life, with a photo of Ella, beautiful and gone. Ella, who Sam replaced when she was hired. Ella who quit with no warning. Who no one has heard from since. Sam develops a torrid obsession, listening to Ella’s music, asking coworkers about her personality, and finally, setting out to find her.

Employee of the Month is a play about retail, depression, lesbianism, and humanity. It is about true love, fake love, and self love. How do we connect to those who came before us? How do we connect to those around us? And how do we connect with the burning core inside ourselves?
