Amanda Plantz is lonely. She has a best friend, a struggling literary agent, Muriel Pender, and she has her job: taking care of plants for offices and a small florist shop. Other than that, she has her books. But she doesn’t read contemporary authors, feeling that they don’t speak to her in the same way as the classics. She also has visitations from her favorite dead authors, who come to her while she sleeps and suggest things that might happen, or tell her things aren’t as they seem. She meets one of Muriel’s clients, Ben Grubb, and is smitten. For his part Amanda inspires something in him and he overcomes a lethargy and writes again; when he shows Amanda the work she inspired he clumsily leaves her shop and we hear the sound of a horrible crash and Ben is run over by a garbage truck and killed. Through Amanda’s efforts, Ben becomes an overnight sensation as a tragic literary figure, snuffed out before his time . . . but then Jack Kerouac suggests in a dream that he doesn’t know any Ben Grubb, dead or otherwise, and when Amanda wakes up, she finds a ‘new’ manuscript by Ben at her bedside. Amanda finds herself in the middle of a storm she couldn’t have foreseen, and can see no way out of.
