Based on a true story, Doubt & Deliberation is a theatrical examination of the magical intersection of art with real life. It is 1838 London and Anna Austen Lefroy attends a garden party thrown by her cousin Fanny Austen Knight, Lady Knatchbull in celebration of Queen Victoria’s coronation. Close as children the two cousins’ paths in life have dramatically diverged. Their only common bond is their Aunt, the famous author Jane Austen with whose spiritual presence Anna continually connects. The scenes flash back to Anna and Fanny’s youthful experiences within their families. Anna dreams of becoming a writer like her celebrated Aunt and Fanny scrutinizes the qualities of her multiple suitors. Both young women look to Jane Austen for advice and lessons in literature, life and love. The scene returns to the garden party and Anna, with the support of her brother Edward and her family, has discovered a renewed sense of purpose. Jane Austen wrote social satires, which highlight the difficult position of women in the 18th century and her universal themes still resonate today.
