Exploring Memory, history and the largely under-investigated impact of white supremacy on the black family guide her work as a playwright. Using story to create an entry point for self and communal introspection and interrogation are the twin light bearers that fuel Denise to craft plays that center the underrepresented African American experience on stage.
She holds an MFA in Playwriting from Sarah Lawrence College and her career as a teacher spans 22 years at Howard University where she is the coordinator of the Playwriting area. Many of her former students have careers on stage and screen. She's studied TV scriptwriting with Zach Ayers and Aly Feltes at Script Academy in Los Angeles CA and comedy writing at Second City Chicago and Upright Citizens Brigade NYC.
