Maddie Rainer

Hi! I'm Maddie Rainer, and I am a playwright who just graduated from Florida State University with my BA in Theatre. I absolutely love pushing the limits of what theatre can do and what forms it can take. I am especially interested in ghost stories, horror in theatre, memory, immersive works and the meshing of theatre with other mediums such as film. I hope you enjoy (or are thoroughly grossed out!) by some of my works ;)

At an extremely competitive all-girls Catholic boarding school, all is going not-so-well…as usual. That is until a quiet, unassuming student suddenly gains prophetic abilities after saving her classmate from a medical crisis mid-class. Word of the “miracle” spreads like wildfire, and soon she’s at the center of a fervent, cult-like following. To some, she’s saintly. To others, she may be the second coming of Christ. The group continues to grow larger and those on the outside of the following find themselves in a sticky position—Do they speak out and face social execution? Or lay low and play along? I mean, what’s the worst a group of high school girls could do?

Stigmata is a chilling horror play that exposes the dark power of groupthink and blind devotion. With a razor-sharp female ensemble, it explores the terrifying intersection of faith, frenzy, and the most fearsome force of all: teenage girls.
