For The Love Of (or, the Roller Derby Play)

by Gina Femia

When Joy gets on the Brooklyn Scallywags and meets the star, Lizzie Lightning, she and her long term partner Michelle find their lives turned upside down. For The Love Of asks how much you’re willing to sacrifice – or lose – in order to follow your heart.

I just read this play for the second time and enjoyed it even more. It is JAM-packed (note derby reference) with fun, interesting roles for women, while also taking us through the main character's personal journey. The dialogue is smart and authentic with a fast-paced rhythm that reflects the Brooklyn backdrop oh so well. I highly recommend!

As a roller derby player myself, I can highly recommend this play as one that truly gets at the heart of one of the most unique sports out there! (NO SPOILERS BUT...) the tattoo scene in and of itself deserves the highest of praise and could stand alone as its own piece. A beautiful, movement-based play that should be produced far and wide!

FOR THE LOVE OF is passionate, funny, sexy, and determined. Being an artist in theater, the concept of doing something for the love of it, and not any for money or success, really grabbed me. The seamless moving in and out of roller derby and life gives the play a fierce theatricality. The dancing! I would LOVE to see this play produced, and with a cast of nine diverse women, it's something that should be going up all over the country. Do yourself a favor and order a copy of this script.... Then produce it in a theater near me!
