Allen's Big Adventure

This monologue, much like the piece it was later expanded into, made me cry. It’s a profound reflection on a life well-lived and loved and a beautifully vulnerable illustration of why we should always write what we know. Allen may have left for the biggest adventure of all, but his memory lives on in his lovers’ memory and mementos of a life together. A hauntingly beautiful piece.

It seems like an impossible task to articulate the hole in our lives that people leave behind when they die, but Philip Williams has done it, with poignancy and beautiful language. In a few short minutes the audience gets such a detailed view of Allen, of Philip and of their relationship that they, too, share in the sense of loss.

This is a beautiful monologue about love and grief and how people linger with us long after they're gone. It paints such a rich picture of who Allen was, who Allen and Philip were together, and who Philip is on his own. It's a perfect encapsulation of loss. Just lovely.

The speaker can be any race, any ethnicity, but perhaps should be middle-aged because he is a gay man looking back on a relationship of over thirty years and fifteen years as lovers, addressing his late partner six months after his death.
