TABLESCAPE was read as part of Florida Rep's 2021 PlayLab Virtual Festival, and it was a welcome addition to the mix. Jeanette's characters are vivid, witty, and face real-world obstacles that surround adoption. The characters are unique and show is that family in 2021 can mean so many different things.

When Joe and Pratt meet the pregnant young woman whose baby they wish to adopt, she has news for them that upends their expectations. And when Joe's sister suddenly arrives on the scene, familial tensions flare and secrets are forced out, putting into question not only the possibility of Joe and Pratt's new family but also the survival of their relationship. A beautiful play about the heartbreak and hope of building a family, about surviving familial trauma, and about the love that makes all of the pain and complexity of intimate relationships worthwhile.

With acerbic wit and rapid-fire dialogue, Farr explores the complicated and often hilarious entanglements of family dynamics set against the backdrop of a gay couple's desire to adopt a baby from a young 18 year old. This play explores the complexities of what it means both to "make" a family and to "be" a family, especially when it matters most. This play has humor and heart in equal measure. A wonderful read, with great roles for actors.
