see in the dark: a new myth

If things keep going the way they're going with our current civilization, then whoever comes after us is going to need some new (and hopefully better) myths of their own. Heidi Kraay's poetic and magnificently theatrical story - of a lost little girl in a vast future wasteland, with abilities that are both gifts and a terrible curse - fills that role nicely, spinning a tale of survival, of vengeance and forgiveness, of the limits of our blinkered individual mindsets and the crucial importance of community. Really marvelous.

This new myth is so beautifully fantastical, heartbreaking, and hopeful - all at the same time. What struck me most about this play is not even that it was such an amazingly crafted post-apocalyptic world, but that the need for family, community, love, and belonging were very much at the heart of the play. The dialogue flowed like water and I can only imagine what this will be like in full production! The possibilities are endless! I can't wait to see where this goes! It was an honor to read your stage directions at the Valdez Theatre Conference!

Bold interplay between post-apocalyptic world building and a fabulist style of theatremaking using masks, puppetry, and magical realist aspects. The result is a fresh attempt at making a new myth for the modern age.

Character Information

Diverse, multi-racial casting is a must. All cast members can be played by any race or ethnicity. No more than half of the cast may be played by white people, at most. Casting that reflects the multicultural spectrum in today's Southeast Alaska is strongly encouraged, with special consideration for Indigenous and First Nations actors, especially those of Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian peoples. Cast members with disabilities also encouraged. The characters may be played by actors of any age. Transgender, non-binary and gender fluid identifying actors are welcome in any role.

For difficult stage directions and character traits, lean into physicality, expressionism, masks and puppetry.
