Physical Education

by Maripat Allen

One act (about 30 minutes) comedy. Young college students, Mike and Becka, are in love and want to get married, but their parents disapprove. Little do they know of the web of scandal their parents are caught in. Love and innocence collide with vanity and hypocrisy when all meet for a parent student dinner in this zany farce.

"Physical Education" unravels the comedic chaos of youthful love with a twist of family farce. In a single dorm room, innocence meets vanity, as secrets threaten young romance. Allen's sharp dialogue and vivid characters make for a hilarious critique of hypocrisy in the corridors of academia.

Like all great farces, Physical Education builds reveal upon reveal and complication upon complication. The simple premise of a young couple in love seeking parental permission to marry explodes into a jumble of complex relationships among the various characters. Efforts to maintain secrets are especially comical, but the entire piece builds wittily to a rip-snorting climax.

The course of true love never did run smooth, well that's definitely the case here! The playwright weaves a beautiful web of complexity as the characters relationships are revealed to the audience, getting more and more complicated by the page. The plot twists and turns with brilliantly crafted elegance, making you smile as the characters discover the crazy situation they have found themselves in. I'm sad I didn't see this piece being done live because my bet is it was brilliantly funny!
