Mestiza, or Mixed

by Melissa Leilani Larson

Mixed Filipino filmmaker Lark Timon is no stranger to failure; it has loomed large throughout her career. Plagued by debt and professional disappointment, Lark chances upon a potentially career-changing opportunity only to be confronted by questions about her art, her relationships and her identity as a queer mestiza.

I am so glad I stumbled across this play and I'm anxious to read more of Melissa's work. This piece does that magical thing where it has very natural dialogue that feels specific and lived in, and yet delivers so much story and character at the same time. Kind of can't believe this is a first draft - wonderful work!

I'm always excited to read Melissa Leilani Larson's work no matter what phase it's in. While I do understand this work is still in "early draft" mode, this play is one I'd love to see live whenever it's ready. Larson has created an amazing character in Lark and her quest for identity kept me riveted. This is the type of story we need more of, especially now, and I applaud Mel for telling it!

If this is an early draft… Jesus! It’s already pretty tight! Larson expertly weaves all the various threads of one family’s life into one compelling story, but never loses sight of her central character Lark’s journey; her determination to make her life her way fuels the entire play. Both intimate and theatrical, it’s a wonderful read; I’m looking forward to the further development of this very moving work.
