Mother's Day

A new mom on a desperate quest for baby formula makes one more stop: an understaffed medieval-themed children's store, where chaos reigns and a judgemental mom holds court. Will our intrepid heroine emerge victorious, and more importantly, unscathed? In this absurd take on modern parenthood, it takes guts to be a mom.

I really enjoyed this play. A biting satire about how hard motherhood can be. These characters start at first as clever archetypes but soon we get to see just how layered they are. This play felt pretty straightforward at first but I loved how absurd and grotesque it got by the end. I definitely ended this play rooting for New Mom as she leaned into her new role as caregiver. The props and effects departments will have an absolute blast making this play a reality.

We start out watching a grounded but knife-sharp satire, and by the end we're in a delightful land of heightened absurdity that crosses a medieval courtly fairy tale with some hilariously horrifying injuries. Which is to say, MOTHER'S DAY offers quite a ride during its ten minutes! So much fun for everyone watching--and creating--this show!

I saw this piece read at the Midwest Dramatists Conference and it was one of the most entertaining works I saw. The Uber Mom was a brilliant construction of an antagonist and dialogue between her and the "normal mom" character was hilarious. The medieval kids store environment surrounding them ("Kid Kingdom") was also magical and The Fool trying to help them had some awesome one-liners. I had an incredibly entertaining, absurd time.
