Josie, a 13 year old girl most comfortable in her favorite GWAR t-shirt, is left to the care of her Uncle Don by her mother – she’s off to meet her boyfriend who she met in an internet chatroom. Josie keeps running off from the campsite because she is hearing lights and sounds around her tent at night. When she discovers her deadbeat dad has come back to town, however, she does everything she can to see him because “he’s seen every sci-fi movie ever made, and he’ll know how to stop the invasion.” After Uncle Don and his girlfriend, Kristine, refuse to help her, she gets what she wants and her dad arrives – only he’s there to borrow money from her college fund to start his new paint shop. As the pressure on her grows and the lights and sounds get closer and closer to her, she comes to terms that she is the only person left to warn others of the invasion.
Though Changeover is a fun story with lights, sounds, and aliens, the play is really about how sometimes what we want isn’t always what we need.
