FULL-LENGTH PLAY. Halle is an author trying to recover from writer’s block while also caring for her mother, an over-medicated hypochondriac with a very real heart problem. As Halle navigates the fight scenes in her new novel, her main character Cyrene – the last of the vampire hunters – starts to invade Halle’s everyday life in real and physical ways. Soon Halle is having sword fights with a faceless enemy, while also engaging in a verbal war with her emotionally manipulative mother. As the fights on the page spill into Halle’s life, she will need to decide which is more important: destroying her enemy or discovering peace.

This play packed an unexpected punch! I didn't set out to read the full-length work in one sitting, but... here we are. Strayer has a delightfully cutting sense of humor throughout all her work and it shines bright through her realistic dialogue, especially between Halle, Avery, and Jaclyn. In this play, Strayer also communicates a powerful metaphor for writing as both an escape and truly a battle, as well as offering powerful reflection on the unique pain that comes from growing up to be different than your parents would have wanted. Highly recommend!

The only thing harder than writing a novel that you can't figure out where it's going (or when you have an idea, it strikes at the WORST possible time) is writing a novel your mother doesn't approve of. Well...that and if your fictional characters also literally step out of your brain to fight you. Strayer's play is a thrilling, pulsating, and poignant clash of swords and hearts. Above all, it's a delicious and layered character study of self-discovery and living up (or not) to our parents' expectations. Fantastic work with some great opportunities for stellar fight choreo.
