One of the best plays about family secrets I've read in a long time.

I saw a wonderful reading of this play that is such an authentic look at a family and their secrets. Every character is well developed and interesting. Berry does a great job creating tensions and giving characters their moments to shine. This will be a play that actors enjoy performing in. Glad it's getting the attention it deserves!

A brilliant, authentic look at family in all its complexity and the bonds that tie that just explodes off of the page. Well done!

What a rich script! All three generations are polarized by their alliances, loyalties, and secrets. Ms. Berry does an excellent job of tempering the pain they face with the sweetness of their true hearts. And you'll swiftly fall in love with the extremely entertaining, cobbler-consuming aunts. Lastly, the table-side apology near the end of the play is one of the best written family scenes I've ever come across. Definitely worth your time!

It is the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center's pleasure to recommend Beaufield Berry and their play In The Upper Room as a finalist for our 2018 National Playwrights Conference. The play rose through a competitive, anonymous, multileveled selection process that took nearly nine months to execute. As one of 53 finalists out of more than 1,4200 submissions, the strength of its writing has allowed this work to prosper in such a competitive selection process

I agree with all the previous recommendations, and here's my 2 cents:

In The Upper Room is a window into a family with three generations worth of intricacies. "Long Day's Journey Into Night" cubed. I am still unpacking the layers. It is an awesome work, in the original, "awe-filled" meaning of the word. My love for this play cannot be overstated: it has reminded me what plays can be and is a call, a dare to up my own game. This play does not simply lie on the page, it lives!

    PRODUCE IT!

A stunning, thrilling exploration of identity, generational mirrors, and the profoundly human task of teaching ourselves how to carry the weights our families ask us to bear. Beaufield has written a new kind of family drama that begs us to question what 'home' actually is, and I so look forward to seeing its story unfold onstage when this piece inevitably makes it way to multiple stages.

I love the themes of responsibility--both the good and bad kinds--that run through this family of deeply etched characters. I can imagine seeing this production and walking away feeling like I'd lost something, but gained so much more. Gorgeous work.

Oh my gosh, I love this play. Berry's language is crisp and clever, inviting her richly-detailed characters to share guffaws and stunning revelations in the same breath. The writer takes on big themes, and it's the current of rich humor that guides us through this journey. I can't believe a theater hasn't snapped this up yet! This play would be a crown jewel in any contemporary season.

Beautiful secrets vs dangerous secrets. Dark magic. An incredibly vivid look into an eclectic family. Full of unique and interesting characters.
