Southbank Theatre Company’s production of Natural Shocks blew away Indianapolis audiences. I’m a big fan of this show, and love how the conversation the main character has with the audience is basically like the internal conversation every abused person has with society but is never allowed to say. The masks we wear — the unreliability of the perfection we present — are on display here. What’s shocking about this play is that we live it every day in America. Brilliant.

An incredibly powerful experience of survival that brings us an unforgettable experience. Bravo.

This play terrified me - I’ve been in that position before, waiting out a tornado and my mind racing across a wide spectrum of emotions. Just like that very unnerving feeling of every second possibly being the last, this play leads us along - our unreliable narrator always keeping us on the edge of our seats until the explosive finale. There is wonderful material here for an actress to explore, with an unyielding pace in steady increase. I can only imagine experiencing this play in person must be like being swept off your feet by a gust of guilt.

A whirlwind of a show built perfectly to keep you on the edge of your seat. The model one-woman show with a message that everyone needs to hear.

A perfect study in the solo show, with a stunning final monologue well worth the price of any admission or time spent reading.

Great one woman play. It kept me engaged and intrigued the entire time. A woman trapped during a tornado and not offering the whole story of how she got there. It leaves you feeling on the verge of tears with a twinge of survivors guilt. Excellent storytelling!

NATURAL SHOCKS starts at a break neck pace and picks up speed from there. This story about statistics and Hamlet and insurance conferences builds into something so much more! Powerful. Breathtaking. I highly recommend!

NATURAL SHOCKS is a marathon and a sprint wrapped up into one twisting, unpredictable, ever-evolving story. Lauren Gunderson masterfully lays out a framework for her single performer and deftly brings back most, if not everything we’ve heard throughout this powerful and moving piece to force her audience to pause and see our world and society for what they are. #PlaywrightPlug

With She as our unreliable narrator, we learn the truth a bit at a time. We understand the lies as we learn the truths. As She finally faces her storm, we have come to fully understand and sympathize with this woman. But the storm is too strong, leaving us only to take away what we can--what must be done to stop so many storms from inflicting their damage. A powerful piece.
