What starts as an extremely effective romantic comedy, with reluctant lovers and well meaning, if overbearing, interfering parents, deepens and darkens into a moving exploration of cultural identity, the refugee experience, and the intractable losses and horrors of war. That such a story could have a credible happy ending speaks to the resilience of the human spirit and to the author's manifest gifts.

This script was respectful, but also so human; it constructed ample room for people’s fears, flaws, and imperfections. That said, it made the appearance of real romance all the sweeter, that it could come to life in a field so crowded with the ghosts of war. I’m a sucker for a happy ending; Ms. Malik has earned hers.

16th Street Theater is producing world premiere of YASMINA'S NECKLACE in January 2016. While hostility and fear of refugees and Muslims flare up in our country (once again), Rohina Malik brings us an American love story. This one happens to be arranged between two families of the Muslim faith: Yasmina and her father Musa are recent Iraqi war refugees while Sam succeeds in the art of Western assimilation, much to his parents' chagrin. Rohina's comedic and powerful story of love, family and faith once again uncovers the humanity in us all.
