This play deftly investigates a strained family relationship which represents, in many ways, the strained family relationship within the 'family' of US citizens today. Both characters are delightfully stubborn, flawed, and engaging. Check it out!

A moving story of a father and daughter working through the barriers that have distanced them, how to work through trauma and move forward. Well done.

This piece is great for anyone who is looking for a dynamic story about a father and daughter who have been pushed apart by different views, loss, and time. "the calm before" is a poignant piece that evaluates how moments from our past come bursting forward to the present and evaluates how traumas can merge and how they can be let go.

A taut and economically written two-hander starring dynamic and exquisitely rendered individuals placed in a perfect, tense setup. A great deal of urgency drives this propulsive play and the hurricane (literal) is an always present and well-used extended metaphor for the human hurricanes within the house. The nuanced threads of family trauma and the realities of grappling with mental health and physical disabilities as adults are woven in so carefully. I'd love to see this compelling piece staged.

Some of my favorite plays are ones that are about regular people dealing with the same sorts of conflicts that we all have in our lives. A father and daughter unexpectedly find themselves working out issues that have driven them apart. It's the sort of grey, murky stuff that we all deal with. The dialogue is clear and continuously moves the action forward. There really are no wasted moments and with every word we get a little better idea of the nature relationship and the looming confrontation.

I think this play is absolutely brilliant; powerful and suspenseful with a deep throbbing heart at its center, I can't wait to see this play produced.

Premiere Stages, the professional Equity theatre in residence at Kean University, is pleased to recognize “the calm before” by Deborah Yarchun as a semifinalist for the 2019 Premiere Play Festival. “the calm before” rose through a competitive selection process conducted by Premiere staff and a panel of outside theatre professionals to become one of 23 semifinalists out of 659 submissions. The panel was particularly impressed by the play’s warmly drawn father-daughter relationship, expert pacing, and subtle, probing investigation of what it means to be a responsible citizen and family member. Our congratulations and thanks to Deborah.
