Loved this multi-layered complicated story about adoption that reveals the character's deep insecurities. I like how it releases just enough info at just the right times, with surprise and humour.

There is so much to unpack in these 10 pages. Bouthiette leads us in thinking this will be the normal new parent freak out and then surprises us with a detour on race before getting us to the finish line. There is so much to explore and discuss and I hope to one day be in an audience discussion for this script.

BIRTHDAY is a sweet short that touches on huge issues like adoption and race with a deft and light hand. Bouthiette uses humor, honesty, and love to ask huge and uncomfortable questions. The last line is perfect, because obviously yes, everyone does/should love Beyonce. Really all around well written and enjoyable.
