The Future Is Female...

When Toni, Maria, and Aditi arrive at the Future is Freedom Retreat, they don’t know quite what to expect, but their fearless guide Lois is eager to share her plan to take back power from the patriarchy. Set in the near future, “The Future Is Female...” asks whether adopting the playbook of the opposition is really the path to empowerment and who will bear the costs.

Pulls off the difficult trick of combining scathing satire with an earnest sense of hope -- ergo, probably exactly the kind of story we need right now. The foibles of recognizable characters collide within an ingeniously hilarious dystopian framework, dramatizing a vision of the future so immediate and plausible that it might all come true before the curtain call. Abundant staging possibilities and richly comical opportunities for four funny actors make this a must-read.

I saw a staged reading of this slyly powerful piece at the 2022 Flint Repertory Theatre New Works Festival. The story is both brilliantly funny and feels terrifyingly plausible. The characters represent women from several walks of life but never feel like "types,' just very real depictions. I swear I've met all of them. I wholeheartedly recommend this play!

We did a reading of this at Best Medicine Rep Theater Company last season. Lots of laughs and salient political points. I definitely recommend this play.
