WITH FELLOWSHIP

WITH FELLOWSHIP bounces back and forth through time, between: The present day – when a team of scientists in a German lab study the fossilized dental plaque found in the jawbones of women buried at a medieval nunnery – and the 11th century – where a German nun is hard at work illuminating manuscripts in collaboration with a nearby monastery. With Fellowship is clearly and artfully crafted. I loved how Keating reintegrated ideas throughout the play which make for a rewarding read. The characters are distinctly drawn and who they are is reflected in their action and in the dialogue. All the voices are highly nuanced and distinct from one another. The stage directions are fun and helps the reader understand even when we are in 1057AD we are still looking at the story through a contemporary lens. A high recommend for reading and programming this play now!

WITH FELLOWSHIP is absolutely deserving of the Student Jane Chambers Award 2022. This play is complex, nuanced, and has fantastic roles for women. The topic is absolutely fascinating, and the relationships between the characters develop complexity over the course of the play. A must read and must produce!

Amanda Keating's time shifts between present-day scientists and their long-dead subject illuminate the universality of sex and discovery. I especially enjoyed the parallels of language out of place: two (presumably American) scientists in a German lab, and a medieval nun, all speaking in a natural vernacular as their own speech would sound to them.
