Cycle Play

When two strangers meet in an urban boutique cycling studio their budding friendship ramps up into a smoothie-ridden rampage of revenge. The cult like language of the club and their intense connection reverberates beyond the studio walls. Cycle Play asks us “Is toxic femininity like, a thing?" and "How combustible are those fast-female-friendships we’ve all been swept up in?" A comedic thriller...

"Toxic femininity" lives somewhere in the space between your local spin gym and the Jamba Juice - and in the world of this vivid, theatrical play, we come to learn that it's dark, lonely, and destructive. I found this play, at once, both strange and foreign and deeply familiar. If you don't know these absurd characters in real life, you've probably met them in the comments section on Pinterest or Instagram. I was most taken by some of the vibrant visual storytelling in the piece - disembodied wigs and impossible mountains of smoothie cups abound! Funny, fascinating, and... fiery! Literally!

Such a unique play about female friendship and empowerment. Love how form is messed with in this play.

The Workshop Theater is pleased to recognize Megan Tabaque as a playwright selected out of a competitive pool of applicants for our Winter 2020 Writer’s Intensive. The Writer’s Intensive is an eight-week long, playwright-driven process geared towards revising an existing play. Cycle Play is a fascinating exploration of toxic femininity, how our traumas grow when unattended, and the mystical power of exercise. Megan skillfully draws in her audience with a friendship between two broken women before what they need, from the world and each other, takes the story to a very dark place. Our congratulations and thanks to Megan.
