Recommendations of Whirlpool

  • Bethany Dickens Assaf: Whirlpool

Once you start reading this play, it’s impossible to stop. The title here is apt: the accusations, power dynamics, and conflicting stories swirl at a frenetic pace, revealing how cases of sexual assault can obfuscate and revictimize women. An anguishing and complex play that wisely refrains from offering easy answers.

I don't often get shocked much anymore, but the end moments of Whirlpool had me sitting with my hand over my mouth. I won't spoil that ending, yet I have to commend Ross Tedford Kendall for throwing such heavy suspense, action, and emotion into such a short time. Maybe it's because the play proper before sets up wonderfully full characters snapping through a quick paced, heavy-hitter of a show. There aren't comfortable lies offered up in this show. Being sexually assaulted and then questioning if you were, it's hell. Kendall opens up that pit and shows us the pain underneath.

ROSS TEDFORD KENDALL’s Play, “Whirlpool’, is a fascinating play of sexual fantasies, bondage, rape, hero worship, and a police investigation, all of which come together in a story with insight, revelations, and power-plays. I was pulled into the story from the beginning. The ending leaves you wondering what comes next, but it is the perfect ending for this play. Captivating!

There are three sides to every story: Yours, mine, and the truth. Ross Tedford Kendall expertly explores this theory through a series He said/She said flashbacks that shift our perspective every time he shifts the focus. WHIRLPOOL will keep you guessing and questioning your own perception of the truth right up until the very end. Great roles for five strong actors. highly recommended.

  • Noah Jennings: Whirlpool

A great psycho-sexual tale that asks the uncomfortable questions one could have about the legitimacy of rape accusations and the many grey areas in the sadistic realm of BDSM. Kendall didn't create a #MeToo whodunnit, but a very critical play on the concept of truth and the unreliability of one's memory of events. It also comments on the power imbalances found in both realms of crime and sexual deviancy, which brings nuance to a cultural conversation that is very sensitive and the play treats it delicately. A must-read!
