This play manages to be hilarious and terrifying at the same moment so your heart is always in your throat. The way Walker showcases women's use of humor as a strategy of resistance is brilliant. The way she demonstrates that with tyranny the most terrifying threats often come from within our own communities and social networks is urgently timely. This play needs to be seen by audiences right now.

Prickly, lyrical, heartbreaking, THE MADRES is a must-read.

A heartbreakingly beautiful story of maternal love and never-ending love. Gorgeous.

"The Madres" took my breath away, even as a reading - it didn't need the benefit of a set, costumes, lighting, or anything else in order to engage the audience. The characters and the story they have to tell are so compelling; the moments of palpable tension are balanced by humor, and the momentum keeps the whole story moving. Stephanie Alison Walker's commitment to her characters, and the sensitivity she brings to this dirty-war story, is fantastic. I saw the reading presented at The Ashland New Plays Festival and look forward to seeing it fully staged sometime soon.

We were so delighted to work on this play with Stephanie as the winner of our Generations new play competition. The play tackles an oft overlooked corner of history with grace, grit, and honesty. Most recently, it was a finalist at the NNPN Showcase and was very well received. I believe it has a strong future for full production.

It is the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center's pleasure to recommend Stephanie Walker and their play THE MADRES as a finalist for our 2016 National Playwrights Conference. The play rose through a competitive, anonymous, multileveled selection process that took nearly nine months to execute. As one of 54 finalists out of more than 1,450 submissions, the strength of its writing has allowed this work to prosper in such a competitive selection process. Our readers responded to the way women at the center of the play gave us a sharp and empathetic view into the larger political situation.

The Madres grips you and doesn't let go. It's an intensely emotional play that also happens to be political. This play crackles with tension in the best possible way. An incredible piece of writing that's getting lots of love, deservedly so.

This is a gorgeous and powerful and touching and surprising work. It's a play that draws you forward and never lets you get ahead of it. I love plays, like The Madres, that writes about an important piece of history from a micro point-of-view. Stephanie takes us inside the home of people touched by the brutality of Argentina in the late 70s. It's an excellent play.
