  • Mike Sockol: Modern Miracle

Jesus shows the patience of Job as he tries to feed his modern day “disciples.” But Martin manages to do so much more with this simple premise. A fun and funny play with a closing line that will please both Christians and non-believers alike.

When I saw Modern Miracle was the play of the day on NPX I was so excited to read it. It's so funny and such a lark and would be a hoot to see live. Some of the lines are so priceless there's too many to really call out here but I did love Lucas's line of "I don't eat anything I can't spell!" when he's served the tilapia. If Martin could only write the entire gospels, it would be a bible I would start following immediately.

Clever play that would be a winning addition to a Sunday service or mass or any Christian educational setting. And also any comedy festival. The concept - so much fun! - genius. I'm part of the Steven G. Martin fanclub -- I recommend checking out his plays and joining the club.

Absolutely delightful little piece for the Christian crowds out there. It's genuinely funny with a sweet message--and Martin creates each character to be individually hilarious in their own way. I could not stop laughing at Lucas bellowing everything. There are so many fast jokes that you might have to read it--or see it--a few times before you catch them all! But what I appreciate is that the sincere message is there and it's displayed in a way that all ages can enjoy. And the Bible puns? Keep 'em coming. A very fun play that would be perfect for Christian schools!

A hilarious, modern-day spin on Jesus feeding the crowd with loaves and fishes. But is the fish freshly-caught or store-bought? Are the loaves gluten-free? And what wine do you serve? Such a great idea, crafted exceedingly well. So good, I'm mad I didn't think of it!
