sam & lizzie

by Emily Kaczmarek

Classmates Sam and Lizzie have their first playdate on 9/11, co-creating an imaginary queendom called Elmazi in order to make sense of the day. Over the next twenty years, the game recurs at startling intervals as the two women navigate their fierce, fraught, electric friendship.

An authentic and heartfelt capture of close friendship through the process of growing up, the love that endures through the worst. Well done.

This play cuts like a knife. Raw, tender, and desperately true, it captures the special alchemy of intimate friendship transcending from girlhood to womanhood, and all the ways we can deeply love and callously hurt one another. A profound and exceptional coming-of-age story.
