  • Susan Westfall: FLY, BABY

This play begins with the hope and fear of a new year, to love lost and found, to the myth of Christmas and the belief in it. It's a play with many levels, and a wonderful example of a short that theatrically explores and fills every moment of ten minutes. It's tiny and epic; the story-telling is intimate and profound, with language that is street poetry. The playwright also creates four characters trying hard to connect, who make us care about their heartfelt efforts to succeed. It

Ah, this play! FLY, BABY is like a short song of hope in the dark. It's funny, quirky, fantastical, sweet. I'm so in it with Miranda and Ariel -- their surface conflict is light and a little silly, but beneath it are deep waters of love and sadness and hope. And there's something about seeing a lovely trans Toothfairy comforting and encouraging an emotionally-exhausted Santa that did something to my heart. Gina Femia has caught four characters in moments of subtle but powerful change in a clever, nuanced way. Terrific.

A very funny, touching piece conveyed through character driven language that is so accessible.
