Missed Connections

Avery, an introverted grammar nerd, has a crush on Lou, a striking and self-possessed newspaper editor. When a missed connection ad details their chance encounter Avery is uncharacteristically emboldened to take a chance on love. The problem? The ad was printed before they met. When more ads start predicting the future everyone's lives are thrown into upheaval.

Fun and delightful, I had the opportunity of seeing a staged reading of Missed Connections with Wayward Sisters Theatre Ensemble. This play is a whimsical story about the signs we seek to take a chance on love. Hallie also created an incredible opportunity for a non-binary actor to shine in the character of Lou.

I recently attended a reading of this play and was thoroughly entertained. As one audience member said in the post-reading discussion, "There is no judgement in this play," and I couldn't agree more. It's beautiful to leave a production with your mouth tired from laughing so much, you're brain tickled from learning new things, and your heart warmed by love. This was the second reading of a work by Hallie that I have attended (the first being a reading of Derailed) and I left both times feeling grateful that playwrights like her exist.

I was intrigued by the premise of this play—the Missed Connections section of the local rag predicting encounters that haven’t happened yet. But, ultimately, what got me was the way those ads encouraged the characters to take charge of their lives instead of letting them pass by. A wonderful example of matching theme with plot device.

*There are two versions of this play. One for a NB character (Lou) as the love interest and one with a female character (Layla) as the love interest. The play is identical except for pronouns a and a couple of references to gender. Happy to provide either script! The current draft up is the one with the NB love interest.

*The actor playing either Justin or Carrie can also play the Clerk.
