Recommendations of A Tale of Terror

  • Greg Mandryk: TATTOO: A Tale of Terror

Conventionally, when a horror story is narrated retrospectively by the protagonist, one may assume that they have survived their ordeal intact and are now sound enough in mind and body to relate their horrific encounter. Burdick brilliantly defies this trope with TATTOO: A Tale of Terror. Tense, atmospheric, and creepy, this would make an excellent addition to any evening of horror radio plays!

  • Doug DeVita: TATTOO: A Tale of Terror

Intense and horrifying, Burdick writes in a dreamlike state, building the tension and the horror in small but insistent increments until everything explodes like a nightmare from which there is no waking. Chilling, fascinating, and I loved every minute of it. I may not sleep for a month, but I loved it.

Your mother warned you never to enter a tattoo parlor! Perhaps you should've listened! Horrifying and well done!

  • Scott Sickles: TATTOO: A Tale of Terror

Like a mad scientist who has you strapped to a table, Burdick keeps his torture implements in plain sight, leaving you to guess how he's going to use them on you.

His weapon is sound. His wicked hunchback assistant is your own imagination. TATTOO is an audiodrama. His voices and noises create a visceral thrill ride through a house of horrors filled with sights and smells that are pure nightmare fuel.

The noirish narration presiding over a "mysterious shoppe with even more mysterious shopkeeper" tale keep you guessing until it all finally, irrevocably comes together. Delightfully unsettling!...

If you want a play with suspense, this is the play for you. Burdick's writing instills this unknown sense of terror at the very beginning, and the fear only increases from there. And damn! when the twist hit, the very air around me boiled over with tension and anticipation. If you're looking for a radio play to fill your night with horror, look no further, because this play has nailed it!

What a thrilling and atmospheric yarn spun so effortlessly by Burdick. Reading the script and listening to the radio play version at the same time showcases Burdick's grasp of narration and action as well as compelling use of sound effects to heighten the growing sense of dread. The ending has me chilled to the bone! Very well done!

AAAAAGGGGGGHHHH I read this play in workshop and *loved* it but just treated myself to the radio play version. (It's almost Halloween, after all.) Burdick's storytelling firepower is in full effect -- and it's clear that the creative team is having an absolute ball. To this writer, who's curious about the radio play genre, it's inspiring and exciting to see (hear??) it done so well. Bravo! (Link to the radio play in the play's Supporting Materials.)

Masterfully eerie. The ending really got me, it made so much sense and yet it was also so surprising. The language usage in this is also so carefully chosen, it works very well. It would be an absolute delight to hear this piece performed. I want more!

  • Lee R. Lawing: TATTOO: A Tale of Terror

This is a true horror classic and so well written. I was immediately drawn into the story and held my breath until the very spine-tingling ending! A tale of terror indeed!

What an ending! If you are looking for radio plays or horror plays.. or both, look no further. Burdick creates a terrifying tale about the power of guilt and revenge through words and effects. I can't recommend this short radio play enough.
