  • Katherine Gwynn: Kubrickian

a deliciously strange script. a tender and frightening look at how men talk to each other and maybe actually come to know one another.

This is up in Chicago now and I have so much FOMO so I’m glad I got to read it here. As someone who grew up relating to her family through movies, this play speaks to me on so many levels. It’s Anne Washburn meets Stanley Kubrick meets The Dumb Waiter and it’s fun and physical and visual and movement based. What more do you want?

For people who love Kubrick, hate Kubrick, or could not care less about Kubrick. Wonderful physical storytelling in the third act!

Just guys being dudes. Talking about movies, and food, and anything else but that. The magic of storytelling. Provides a little escapism.

i may firmly disagree with chris that the shining movie is better than the book, but the passion and devastation of this play still strikes home.

Truly a triumph, KUBRICKIAN takes the awkwardness of having a movie explained at you and turns it into a madcap brilliant celebration of passion. I've seen this partially performed and fully read at this point, and both times every moment has clicked with a fully-enthralled audience. A weird and wonderful piece.

  • Ben Kaye: Kubrickian

More than just a play about a specific film director, KUBRICKIAN examines how men talk to - and with - each other, and how monotonous and lonely of an experience that can often be, distilled into pop culture analysis and droll small talk shorn of any truthful emotional connection. And then, yes, it is also about Stanley Kubrick, and how fractured his legacy and reputation have become, all before building to a final set-piece that genuinely reckons with how expansive and life-affirming his works stand for a specific generation of people. As totemic and baffling as, well, a Kubrick film.

  • Zach Barr: Kubrickian

An audacious deviation from the conventions of the form, "Kubrickian" is a rare work: a play that provides only answers and leaves the audience to ask the questions. A deft portrait of three characters who have been listened to far more than they've ever been heard, its an insightful look at the ways we mostly fail – and, occasionally, deftly succeed – to communicate when it matters most.

  • Patrick Vermillion: Kubrickian

As our jobs become more meaningless and our sense of community disappears, we are increasingly left with little to identify ourselves with other than our taste in movies. Zack has recognized this trend and uses this play to explore how much our generation's memories, values, and intelligence exist in relation to the media we consume. A play that is both curious and truthful in what it explores. As damning a reflection of modern masculinity as it is delicate a portrait of male friendship in an age of profound loneliness. As a lifelong Kubrick-head, I loved it.
