A beautiful play that explores so many intricate and well-rendered people and connections! Maeve and Nessa's relationship is painted here with a fine brush that honors their intelligence and individuality as humans, interrogates the relationship's strengths and limitations, and honors their obstacles while focusing on queer hope vs. tragedy. I appreciated the representation of multiple parental responses to their queer teens coming out, and the centering of healthy action steps in the face of adverse circumstances. This is a piece that should be read/consumed/performed by and for young folks...

  • Shaun Leisher: You Have To Promise

A play that truly deserves to be in the high school theatre canon. It's just so honest in its depiction of foung love and parental struggles. Lang treats the lives of these seventeen year old with the seriousness and respect they deserve and how she allows the parent figure to not have her shit together at all times was so beautiful. • Michael Tricca: You Have To Promise

You Have To Promise is an achingly beautiful piece, one in which the love the characters hold for each other radiates in every moment and glows in every silence. The dialogue is insightful and poignant; Lang has a way of making every word each character says, and everything they don't say, draw you in and capture your attention.
Structurally, the play moves in a way which beguiles its audience with its turns. I was somehow thankful for the remote viewing; it let me gasp as loudly as I wanted in despair and cheer even louder in joy. Don't miss this.
