  • Enid Cokinos: Two Socks Discuss Loss

I love stories written from the perspective of inanimate objects, and Walt McGough has crafted an adorable account of what socks go through after losing their mates (so relatable to us sock owners). Easily produced and full of heart, this play will be a hit in any festival.

I adore a play that's sneaky good! Two Socks Discuss Loss is a terrific meditation about moving forward after loss. Charming.

It’s like Toy Story for feet. Two anthropomorphic socks discuss the experience of losing a mate and the struggle of carrying on in a mismatched relationship in this wonderful, charmingly quirky play.

A beautiful play that takes something rather bizarre and teaches a beautiful lesson. Put this one on!

A surprisingly thought provoking and deep story told through an unusual and semi-absurdist lens. This is a wonderful play that balances the comedic and somber moments of its plot very well!

  • Andrew Martineau: Two Socks Discuss Loss

This is amazingly good. I never thought a sock pun would feel so right, but to not appreciate one from this play would be “a crime against sockness.” What a perfect metaphor for the need to connect with someone who can be so easily lost to us. I will never again think about mismatched socks the same way and I am okay with that. Brilliant!

Beautiful! I'd like to do the sound design -- Stephen Stills has the perfect outro to this play, but you may not have read it, so I don't want to give the end away! Conceptual plays can often only be about their concept without any follow-through, but McGough manages not only to conceive of a brilliant metaphor, infuse 2 objects with lives, backstories, senses (!!!), setting (!) and emotion, he also creates a forward-moving plot to culminate in a climax and change! And all while moving us to tears!

“There is nothing sadder for a sock than knowing beyond a doubt that your mate is never, ever coming back.”

In this wonderfully moving play about adapting to a major loss, that line is both hilarious and heartbreaking, accurately and acutely capturing all of the feelings one has when faced with new and unwanted circumstances, and having to move on – whether one is a sock, or the human who wears them. Touching, and beautifully handled from beginning to end.
