John Bavoso does it again, recontextualizing and humanizing characters from Western legend/religion/mythology to hilarious and moving effect. The unexpected bond between Prometheus and his torturer the Eagle is sweet, funny, and utterly charming; firm-headed Heracles’ self-serving intervention a not-entirely-welcome development. The enormous wit throughout is winning and quotable as hell, and the conclusion tender and lovely. Bravo, Bavoso. Bravo.

I am all too familiar with Greek mythology, having suffered through it in high school and the dry retellings at the hands of serious scholars. So thank you, thank you, John Bavoso for liberating both Prometheus and the rest of us from the dreary tales that explained humanity's plight and gave it not just a modern twist to 21st Century realities and human/avian/demigod feelings and their foibles. Mythology needs humor, and this stuff has us rolling in the aisles.

Full of witty references for fans of Greek mythology (my personal favorite: Hercules’ “12-step program”) and hilariously groan-worthy puns for the rest of us, PROMETHEUS SHRUGS is a tightly-written, wholly original fractured-fairy-tale of ennui and bittersweet endings.

This was lovely. Funny, but also contemplative about our relationship to change.
