  • Ross Tedford Kendall: In the Slush

Horror takes on many forms; it's not just jump scares and actors in costume. Playwright Prillaman explores the creeping horror that can manifest in unlikely places, such as expectant motherhood. Expertly written, where you get to know the main character before the rug is pulled out from under you. That is the real achievement of this piece, and for a theatre with this sensibility, they will find this will be a memorable production.

This piece is a fantastical look into the real eldritch horror of our world: becoming a parent. Prillaman's use of cosmic horror, humor and the American family creates a piece worth investing, developing and producing nationwide.

There are few plays you read, and then can not stop thinking about for the rest of your day. BEWARE: This is one of those plays. The balance of humor and horror is just right, and the characters are full of life, even the ones you see less of. If you have a moment to read a full play, I say, make it this one.

In the Slush is a treat. It's the sort of show, as a director, I would fail to savor long enough before the run is done. As an actor, the kind to lose yourself in. As a reader or in the audience... Goodness. This is a show begging to be made. There are moments of violent horror that movie makers would salivate over. When your entire existence is upended and you find yourself biting at your maker, there's something feral about that. Funny. Terrifying and madness driving. Oh, how I loved this. Bravissimo, Daniel Prillaman. I can't wait to watch.

What a fun journey! Lots of twists and turns and humor along the way. "The cabinet" scenes are fantastic and the ending hit hard. Kudos!

This play twists and turns and constantly surprises! Prillaman creates a world that is familiar but still exquisitely, ridiculously dangerous. I loved the surreal dream sequences SO much! Wonderful and exciting work!

This is my absolute favorite work by Prillaman (for now). This is a piece that everyone at every level would be excited about bringing to life. Prillaman only answers the questions that we need answers for, building this world that is so terrifyingly similar to our own. You can't help but imagine yourself as every character, as they are each fascinating in their own ways. Would you do the same as them if you were in their shoes?

This is not the story I thought it was going to be! Every twist and turn was a surprise and filled me with all of the emotions one might find in an unsolicited manuscript. The story the characters are trying to bring in to the world never turns out the way they expected either. And honestly, I could see this going on to be an interesting and dark series, with audiences not able to help but root for the anti-heroes!

Oh my goodness, I devoured this play! With quick dialogue and a plot full of surprises, "In the Slush" is a treat from start to finish. It was one step ahead of me the whole time, and I loved it.

  • Conor McShane: In the Slush

A consistently compelling and surprising play with some nifty twists and turns. The relationships between Laura Beth, Ethan, and Hope are subtly, believably rendered, making what happens next all the more unsettling. The fact that it feels like there's so much more story to tell speaks to the author's skill at giving us just enough to always keep us wanting more, something the wannabe authors in the slush pile would do well to learn!
