Hunting BigFoot

by Theresa Giacopasi

In the writers' room for "Hunting BigFoot," the hot new BigFoot reality show, the two creators struggle to answer the question: who is BigFoot? From Teddy Roosevelt to Ken Burns to Oprah, our national cryptid reveals itself again and again, but becomes more mysterious each time it removes its mask. What's more American than BigFoot and reality television? And what does that mean for us?

This is such a great ensemble piece about storytelling. Bigfoot is all of us because ingesting and digesting stories is what keeps the world going. The framing of the writer's room, a stressful room of blankness, is a great device as it gets filled with all of the ideas that have inspired America and American stories through time. The bits and pieces of true and false history are also very American since the beginning. This story tells so much and allows many actors to be showcased in a fun way.

BigFoot is possibly the greatest American myth. A writer's room...is a close second. Giacopasi has hilariously interwoven these two things to create a really special play - a witty, surprising, heartfelt look into where our stories come from, who tells them, and how those stories shape our sense of the American legend. With pop-ups from some of your favorite historical figures, Giacopasi ultimately asks us to interrogate the gatekeepers of our myths, the accessibility of our shared national history, and how that ultimately effects representation in our media.

Very witty - a fanciful flight into the myth of Big Foot. On a more serious note, myth itself seeks definition here, and historical facts are props for this theme. I enjoyed the critique of modern media makers, which took the form of the two narrators. Giacopasi approaches the topic of myth with lenses as unclear as those in which we see Big Foot, and finally arrives at a clear picture of America's character.
