Recommendations of The Drums

  • Annie Considine: The Drums

I saw this as a staged reading at the Midwest Dramatists Conference and loved the levity that Katherine Vondy has infused into a frightening contemporary premise - an app that reveals what's in your soul. Vondy has done a great job of infusing this comedy with disquieting moments, along with brilliant characters that juxtapose the disquiet with upbeat, professional chatter. Loved it!

  • Ward Kay: The Drums

A fun little play that is very scary to know that its evil app is probably being contemplated by some soulless tech bro as the follow-up to AI. In the reading I saw at the Midwest Dramatist Center, Dome was played with such a benign cheerfulness that made his sociopathic words even more chilling. A wonderful play that is very much in the now.

  • Audrey Webb: The Drums

This play is full of unexpected dialogue, loaded with comedy. Don't be deceived by the seemingly light banter between these two quirky characters. They come out with ideas that will really make you think! The Drums makes insightful comments about technology and humanity, all in a way that will keep you laughing. And it's super beautiful that these roles can be played by any age, gender, or race!

  • Christopher Plumridge: The Drums

This play poses an uncomfortable question, just how far are we from an app which looks into your soul? And what devastating effects this could cause?
This is a slick two hander, the characters and their interactions are perfectly believable.
Having said this, I'm up for the drum circle app!
    Great!

  • Charles Scott Jones: The Drums

Part of the charm of Katherine Vondy's THE DRUMS is how meticulously crafted it is. The play always knows exactly where it's going - as it keeps you the reader a step behind - a cool place to be because you don't feel lost but you're never quite there - so it's, like, whoa, let me go read this again. The back and forth between Sharky and Dome is big fun and their app concepts are very clever. And I love it that the roles can be played by anybody, the faces of good and evil open to all!!
